North to Alaska- Day 3

We started off from Dawson Creek which is the beginning point of the Alaskan Highway. We filled up the tank ($4.83 a gallon) and then went to Wal Mart and got our breakfast of apple sauce, poptarts, and bananas and then headed north. We got to Fort Nelson and went to the bank and got Canadian money. The $50 and $100 has a clear portion in the money with a hologram in it and had a plastic feel to the paper which was unusual. We topped of the tank there for $5.50 a gallon.

The scenery just kept getting better and better. We crossed wide rivers  and around every corner the mountains got taller and taller.  We had to go over mountain passes and the views were amazing. The lakes along the way were still frozen over with ice even though the temperature was in the low 50's.

In one section we came across several forest fires that filled the valley with smoke.

At Muncho Lake we topped off the tank again this time for $7.02 a gallon. While that was the most expensive I did not want to chance being somewhere without gas because seeing cars was few and far between.

From this point to Watson Lake it was if we hit the bear country reunion. It first started off with seeing Caribou along the road.

Then we saw our first bear. He had come out of stream and was all wet. He was on one side of the road then crossed in front of us and went to the other side. He had a big scratch on his side.

From there it was bison with their young.

From there is was another bear then another and another until it seemed like there was one every half mile. We saw a mom and two cubs but she hurried back into the forest as we drove up. The single bears though just stayed by the side of the road as if we were not even there. The furthest bear was probably 30 feet from the road.

After seeing several black bears we found a brown bear. In all we saw 18 bear within and hour and a half time frame.

We crossed over into the Yukon and then got to Watson Lake in the evening.

We thought that is where we would stay but the hotel choices were limited and there was really no where to eat. We got some gas across the street from the "Sign Forest" for $5.22 a gallon.

We then found that there was a little grill at the gas station and we had a fresh made hamburger and fries. The lady was really nice who cooked it for us, but you could tell she was also a little rough. You have to be to live in this area. Her and another guy were talking about car engines and repairing them and she made a comment you need to know how to fix a car in this area if you are going to drive one. Maybe we should of checked what type of grease the fries were cooked in. We bought some more poptarts for breakfast for the next morning and took off.

We drove  for a few hours and then decided to pull off the road and sleep in the car that night because it was getting to be 10 and the sun was setting and we did not want to find an animal on the road when it was dark. We saw our first moose though before we pulled off. We traveled 709 miles this day on the Alaskan Highway.
