Celebrating the 24th of July

It seemed like there are a lot of events that lead up to the 24th celebration. The week started off with going to a Peter Brienholt concert at the amphitheater. As the concert was going on the sunset lit up the Municipal Building. There were scattered storms around. We did not know it at the time but when we went home, the roads were wet from 12th Street north from a storm.

Next it was stake Lagoon Day. It had been several years since we had been to Lagoon but we decided to go this year with the family. Payton loved most of the rides except the Lady Bug Jump. Cecelia did not like it either though.  I am not sure how Maddie liked the teacups.

There were other rides that they really enjoyed though.

What would Lagoon be without the boat rides for the kids?

We all had to do Rattlesnake Rapids to cool off and yes we did get wet.

The next event of the celebration was going to the rodeo. There are the skydivers bringing in the flag.

Then of course the bronc riding and flying.

That was followed by trick riding.

Steer wrestling.

Watching the posse to see if they would run into each other this year.

Bull riding.

Watching the kids have fun being at the rodeo.

And of course at the end watching the motorcycle jumpers. How that deals with the rodeo I don't know but they are fun to watch.

Finally everything is capped off with the parade on the 24th.

Bear Lake Trip

Cindy and I took a short two day trip to Bear Lake. On the way up Logan Canyon there were a couple of areas where we had to stop because of road construction. One place was right along the Logan River before the Logan Cave. It was a beautiful scene to sit and wait at.

We made it to the Sunrise Campground and were lucky enough to find a great spot to pull the tent trailer into. We read books and then decided to go for a early evening hike at the Limber Pine trail which was just a short distance from the campground.

The wild flowers were in bloom and it made the trail enjoyable to see all the different colors. We even saw some Sego Lillys.

We made it to the Limber Pine area and stood by one of the older trees which is over 580 years old.

We then continued on and came across a portion of the path that looked so picturesque it just invited you to continue.

We then came to an overlook where you could see Bear Lake.

We made it back to camp, played a mean game of scrabble and then went to bed.
The next day was our exploration day. We first went to Minnetonka Cave. We were lucky that we got right in because there were just the two of us. We climbed the 888 stairs  inside the cave and saw the wonderful formations created by the water dissolving the rocks and then dripping to leave the material behind.

The next stop was the Paris Ice Caves. This was two canyons to the north . It was so interesting to see that inside the cave was a frozen ice floor and then ice columns that went from floor to ceiling. The light would shine through the ice to create a glow in the ice. The ice caves are formed by winter cold being trapped in the cave and heat can not make its way into the cave.

From there we did a tour of the Paris Tabernacle. It began construction in 1884 and was completed in 1889. It is an amazing structure when you consider what they had to work with in its construction.

After the tour we went to the north shore and played in the water for a little bit and then it was time for dinner back at the camp ground. It was a pretty fun day.

The Happy together tour

We went to a concert with our friends the Muellers on the 9th of July at the Sandy amphitheater.
The name of the concert was the Happy Together and it was a collection of several top singers of the 60's. As you can imagine they are a little older now as well as the group that came together that night to listen to them. The singers were in their 60's and early 70's just like most of the audience but it was sure fun.

First it was Gary Lewis of Gary Lewis and the Playboys. Top song -This Diamond Ring. Other claim to fame- His dad was comedian Jerry Lewis.

After two and a half hours of rockers.... oh wait that was rock and roll, the show came to an end. It was great and the kids weren't around to say "Dad change the channel". Oh to be back in the 60's. Wait two more years and I will be in the 60's!
